Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas; (Originally A Depressing Song)



In this clip, Meet Me in St. Louis, starring Judy Garland, she sings a depressing, but hopeful tune, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas to a young girl who is determined to bring all of her toys, including the ones that Santa might give her, even the dead ones, too! In the original lyrics written by Hugh Martin, one of the lines -- well, the first line was: Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last. Depressing, ain't it?!

This was soon changed, though, when criticized for being to depressing for a Christmas song. He changed the lyrics from "It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past" to "Let your heart be light / Next year all our troubles will be out of sight".

This song was made popular in the movie Meet Me in St. Louis sung by Judy Garland in 1944, which became a very popular Christmas tune since then, covered by several artists such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, and several more...
